Modification

A project of Lacaton & Vassal with Frederic Druot. The transformation of a typical housing complex.

The 10 stores block in Saint Nazaire, France is part of a housing complex typical of the 70s and based upon a massive development of modern housing with an optimistic vision of the future. The district has no longer attraction to day. Its image has deteriorated.
Such situations usually lead to destruction and sprawl through a redesign of the mass plan with no attention to what already exists.
Lacaton & Vassal do not like this method. They think that to demolish is a mistake. It is possible to do otherwise. Transformation can and must be achieved.
The stakes are multiple. Comfort must be enhanced, apartments been given more space. New quality housing blocks should be built by taking advantage of the low density on lots already bought and equipped.
Transformation starts with the change of housing units. Here surface must be added by enlarging living rooms and bath rooms. The unit is to be opened on the outside by creating large windows. Climatic conditions must be ameliorated while reducing the energy consumption.
All this is to be achieved with no heavy duty intervention upon the concrete structures which are in good condition and should be re-used at their maximum.

More about the project in the new issue of Abitare Bulgaria p. 84 - 99.
